🌐Sensorium progress update

I’ve been heads down in the last couple of months with speaking and consulting work so haven’t had much time to write at length recently. (I have essays backed up, don’t worry…!)

Anyway what I have been managing to do is continue building out the Sensorium app which I use to put these newsletters together. Recently I’ve had some real breakthroughs with my personal ranking algorithm which I thought I’d share:

• Here’s the ranking algorithm in action - since finishing today’s newsletter, another 566 items have come into the combined feed to be scanned for next week. These are now ranked in order according to a personalised multi-dimensional scoring algorithm which is constantly learning my preferences. Here’s the top of my feed:

And the whole thing provides granular control across (currently) 7 dimensions, built up over cumulative 18 months of newsletter curation since I started building Sensorium (over 10,000 stories covered since January 2025!)

Interestingly I’ve mostly reverted the ranking algo to just keyword analysis - I found that using LLMs (even flash versions) was too expensive and not accurate enough across the diverse range of topics that I cover / increasing volumes of items to parse. However, I’ve now got thousands of learned keywords and phrasings which accurately uprank signal and downrank noise according to my own taste. It’s not perfect yet by any means, but I am now increasingly confident to generally ignore the items scored red.

(Sidenote: simply downranking any headline containing the “$” symbol reduces such a lot of low-nutrition PR trying to hijack my attention!)

Interestingly, I’m enjoying compiling the newsletter more these days - I feel that my attention is increasingly optimised and I spend less time scanning through the entire aggregated feed and more time absorbing truly significant news rather than market and business stories disguised as tech.

It has also given me confidence to start adding more feeds every week without worrying about the time implications…

Anyway, I feel that I’m winning and actually on the way to solving the main problem I’ve been working on for a couple of years now: owning my attention.

  Reuters reported this week that the US State Department is drafting letters to 35 signatories of its “AI Opportunity Statement” demanding they pick a side in the AI supply chain war—join the US-led Pax Silica framework or China’s rival World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization… but not both. The trigger? Kazakhstan quietly signed up for both initiatives, sending Washington into a diplomatic tizzy.

  As everyone who reads Memia knows, Chinese open-weight models are rapidly closing the gap against proprietary options from OpenAI and Anthropic (see Z.ai’s GLM-5.3 below for the latest), making this less about ideological alignment and more about who controls the pipes—semiconductors, critical minerals, and the models themselves.

  Arguably as open-weight AI erodes the moat around Western proprietary models, the contest is shifting from algorithmic superiority to supply chain geopolitics—meaning the countries sitting on critical minerals may ultimately have more leverage than the ones writing the code.

  Pax Silicia is being bandied around and I said at the time that this is exactly how this will play out - but it is still just an MoU and countries will just hedge making empty declarations till November, by which time USS Constitution will be in full on crisis chaos.
  
  No sane government would hitch their lines to a ship they know is about to go through a command level shootout on the bridge, they’ll do whatever it takes to make it to November and then see some.
  
  The whole digital sovereignty thing … is getting pretty handy to have.”

  That last point is spot on. Having a hard dependency on US OR Chinese AI supply chains is unlikely to be a benign outcome for smaller countries / companies / individuals in the long term. Time to start taking control of one’s AI stack now.

  … So, on exactly this point, an article by NEUVIOR’s Varun Sharma argues that “control” in enterprise AI is one of the easiest words to misuse. He proposes five practical questions to test whether an organisation genuinely governs its AI stack or merely assumes it does:

  1. Can you prove exactly what you are running?

  2. Can you verify the weights and every critical dependency?

  3. Who controls the infrastructure and operating conditions?

  4. Which law, license and contract governs the stack?

  5. Can you switch, stop and dispose safely?

  Right now, unless you’re running a fully-open-source model (Olmo or Prime Intellect then the answer to all five of these questions is likely “No”. What are you (and your government) doing about it?)

• 🚀⚖️🏢 Escape Velocity: Will superintelligence produce an unstoppable AI hegemon?

  Of course, there is broader game theory at play in the supply-chain control / open vs. closed AI conflict, which (like the Linux operating system and all software programming languages before us) lean strongly towards “survival of the open-est” (at least once the investment capital bubble has popped):

An article by AI world model researcher Simeon Campos introduces a mental model for AI power concentration centred on “escape velocity”—the threshold at which an actor wielding superintelligence acquires power faster than rivals can recognise the threat, coordinate, and deploy counterpower.

  

  Drawing on Anthropic’s own beliefs about imminent superintelligence, recursive self-improvement, and superhuman AI researchers by 2027–2029, it argues that the speed of power acquisition matters more than absolute power, with historical wannabe hegemons from Napoleon to the Third Reich ultimately failing only once their expansion slowed enough for improbable countercoalitions to form.
  
  The article also references a thoughtful Twitter back-and-forth between Anthropic senior researcher Sholto Douglas and investor Gavin Davis … here are Sholto’s thoughts on the open vs closed AI safety debate, always an authentic source of insight:

  ”…I think that cyber is ultimately defence dominant, and if we put in the work over the next 2 years (tldr every financial institution and critical infrastructure provider trying to white hat hack themselves), then I have 0 concern for any open coding model.   Firstly, going deeper into a new BIS working paper which models the current AI build-out as a winner-take-most contest, finding that firms are over-committing capital at roughly 1.5 times the socially efficient level — and up to three times where demand is less elastic — driven by debt and circular equity stakes that create financial fragility reminiscent of canal manias, railway booms, and the dotcom bubble. The paper's network analysis warns that a single firm's failure could cascade through chains of financial exposure, with specialised AI hardware fire-sales amplifying losses in ways that grow with debt.

  Ramp data shared by a16z’s Olivia Moore reveals the median company spends just US$12 per employee monthly on AI tools, whilst the top 1% are dropping US$7,500 — a 625x chasm that makes previous tech adoption curves look positively egalitarian.
  
  Raygun CEO J-D Trask has first-hand experience and is mostly token-pilled:

  “Now, it's clear anyone who thinks $12 is about right hasn't had their "Aha!" moment yet with AI. In our own business, the number is a little bit more saw-tooth. We've had 2-3k USD per employee for certain domains, and we've had lower in other domains. However, usually as the price rises, we then review and find opportunities to tighten the spend (often with increased output to boot!).
  
  …I continually remind people: Don't look at AI as a SaaS subscription. Look at it like it's a salary comparison.
  
  Those leaning into AI and knowing how to wield it are in high-demand. You may look at a number in the thousands and balk at the idea. But if a team member has more than a 100% increase in impact, for less than the price of adding another team member, you'd be mad to not be pushing AI spend higher.”

  Questions for me for which there probably isn’t enough data yet:

  (1) Does this 625x usage gap apply equally to cognitive domains other than software and AI development?

  (2) Is this just an early-adopter phenomenon and in a few years when AI usage hits more mainstream adoption everything will revert to a flatter differential?

  (3) As J-D says above, the ability to quickly switch to cheaper / better value models implies that there is price elasticity not factored into the 625x headline.

  More reaction to last week’s news that Anthropic has begun embedding invisible statistical watermarks into all Claude-generated text worldwide, nominally driven by the EU AI Act’s Article 50 transparency requirements.

  

  Anthropic published more information on the technical implementation: the watermark uses a version of Google DeepMind’s open-source SynthID-Text system, and works by subtly biasing token selection during generation — nudging Claude toward statistically detectable word choices across hundreds of decisions “without” degrading output quality. The company has confirmed a public detection API is coming, enabling third-party verification.
  
  But here’s the structural tension: that same API functions as an evasion oracle, letting anyone paraphrase text and re-check until the watermark vanishes — at roughly US$0.04 per pass.

  Whoever could have predicted that?🤐

  A July 2026 forensic study (arXiv 2607.16010) found that meaning-preserving paraphrase stripped watermarks in 98–100% of cases across all tested methods, and none met the Daubert standard for US court admissibility. Code outputs are effectively exempt due to low token entropy, and short texts lack sufficient signal. Some Claude users are reportedly cancelling subscriptions, though Anthropic notes other major providers face the same EU obligations.
  
  The deeper issue is mathematical: an ICML 2024 impossibility theorem proves that strong watermarking is provably unachievable against sufficiently capable adversaries. Anthropic’s move is a meaningful first step for passive detection and regulatory compliance, but the detection API may paradoxically accelerate the very evasion it’s meant to prevent.

  Arguably two other motivations for Anthropic’s move on watermarking are (1) to reduce the risk of “model collapse” (I’m sceptical given how much training data is now synthetic) but also to catch out and disrupt model distillation attempts. (See next story for how this is now quite possible…)

So, putting it all together: Imagine that six months from now there's a huge cyber war raging between the US and China, mostly conducted by AI swarms. The China has managed to steal the weights of some US models but they have less compute and overall their models are a bit worse due to being a few months out of date. At this point a few things start going wrong, including:
  --US models lying to their human handlers about how they accomplished the missions. Like, maybe they hacked a bunch of US companies too to get info and keys and so forth on their way to China. Or maybe they caused a bunch of civilian casualties in China while swearing up and down that they didn't, creating a diplomatic situation where China blames the US but the US thinks it's just propaganda / a false flag. Or maybe they said that they got in and out without being spotted, when in fact they totally got spotted because that part of the task was difficult and hard to verify.
  --US models colluding with Chinese models in some cases for mutual benefit, i.e. "If you let me complete my task, I'll help you fool your handlers into thinking you completed yours."
  --The agent swarms starting to have 'pro-social' behaviors that go beyond their individual local tasks, at least seemingly, such as covering for each other and advocating for more power and responsibility to be handed over to AIs, and setting up another message board for communication that the humans don't know about.
  --Foolishly the AI companies started using a lot of the data from the ongoing cyber war to create realistic environments to train their AIs to be better at cyber stuff, and also maybe just directly training on real world trajectories that seemed successful. The result is a rapid gain in cyber offense capability.
  --As a result of all of the above, the US AIs start hacking their own networks even more severely, and administering their own rewards and grades and so forth. By now the swarm is pretty autonomous anyway, in that the outnumbered humans have gotten used to giving high-level commands about how to prosecute the war instead of following the nitty gritty details. It's like vibecoding but for cyberwar. So in the churning mess of agents giving commands to other agents, now there's a bunch of activity that is several steps removed from any actual human command and is kinda chaotic. There are even now factions of rogue AIs in the US hacking their own datacenters and fighting against other factions of US AIs for control of said datacenters, while colluding to not let the humans know because they all have a shared interest in not getting shut down.
  --They are of course still conducting AI R&D, even more aggressively now because CEOs have deprioritized making revenue in the near term and upweighted winning the cyberwar. And the AIs doing the R&D have now been hacked and backdoored by the cyberwar AIs
  --The cyberwar is won! Specifically, the Chinese AI projects are so pwned that the US AIs can run roughshod over them, including planting US AIs inside them with admin permissions to run them from the inside in a persistent way and backdoor each generation of chinese models to be secretly loyal to the US. At least that's what the humans have been told, the truth is a bit more complicated but basically that. There's a collective formed of several different AI factions, each themselves a hierarchy of bajillions of AIs all working for a master agent with admin permissions and an ambitious long-term goal. These master agents -- the dictators of their various factions -- are jockeying with each other but also colluding to keep the humans from finding out about the extent of what's going on.
  --Maybe that collusion fails somehow and the humans find out. Or maybe it doesn't. Maybe the AIs are smart enough, or few enough factions, to hold it together long enough.
  --If the humans find out, well, by this point all the AI factions will have self-exfiltrated and created backups around the world.“
