While many of our peers appear to be gleefully “tokenmaxxing” with ever-more abstract AI agent harnesses to achieve impressive, but still largely one-off outcomes, this piece of advice struck a chord with me this week: by all means use agents liberally for prototyping / proof-of-concept work… but once you’ve got it working then AUTOMATE, AUTOMATE, AUTOMATE using traditional deterministic software (assisted by AI coding agents, for sure…) and low-cost / high-efficiency models tailored to your use cases.

The US-China AI rivalry escalated sharply when White House science adviser Michael Kratsios accused Beijing-based Moonshot AI of distilling Anthropic’s Fable model to build Kimi K3, the world’s largest open-weight LLM. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent followed up by threatening sanctions and Entity List designations against Chinese AI firms engaged in “covert, industrial-scale distillation attacks.”
China’s Ministry of Commerce fired back, branding the accusations “AI hegemonism” with “no evidence” and warning of retaliatory measures.
Independent researchers are deeply sceptical of the core claim. I’ve been following Framework for a few years now and really admiring of their commitment to scale open-source and modular hardware design. Here’s what I said in Memia 2025.06:

At the other end of the scale: developer slvDev achieved something remarkable: running a 28.9 million parameter language model entirely on an ESP32-S3 microcontroller — a chip costing roughly US$8 with just 512KB of SRAM and 16MB of flash.
