Dear oh dear. There’s an old line that in the long term the stock market is a weighting machine, and in the short term it’s a voting machine. If you build a very leveraged and concentrated portfolio, you may think that you are betting on the long-term, but in fact, you’re betting that the market will agree with you every step of the way. It won’t - share prices fluctuate and do not move in straight lines to the correct answer. So, you will do very well for a while and then blow up, much like the turkey the day before Christmas who says ‘everything’s going great so far!’ It will be entirely your own fault. I’ve seen a fair few stories about how Aschenbrenner is brilliant, and there was certainly talent of a sort required to get people to give him billions of dollars to invest, but how do you not know that markets fluctuate? He made his name with a manifesto about the future of AI that showed a spectacular naivety about the real world … and perhaps that’s the answer here. On the other hand, if he was making 2 and 20 with no clawback, the explanation might be less naivety than cynicism.“

His understanding of AI as an industrial process, a function of energy and silicon, is structurally sound. AWS is growing 37% on a $169 billion run rate with a $496 billion backlog; Meta has $700 billion of infrastructure commitments. And UBS and Samsung expect memory to remain tight into 2028.“
(Who remembers this clip?)🙉:Lots of schadenfreude out there poking sticks at the wunderkind becoming unmoored in spectacular fashion. However, remember that (1) if the fund had continued to be up the media would all be singing his praises as a “genius” and (2) he took a management fee on all that capital invested … 2 years of “2 and 20” fees could total up to US$300M by some estimates.🤯
For me, the episode just demonstrates the casino-type mentality that pervades Silicon Valley and US VC markets at the height of this bubble. That kind of public failure with other people’s money would be career-ending (and possibly far worse) in most countries around the world including my own. The broader US financial system which actively encourages these concentrations of wealth — and CELEBRATES this kind of risk taking right up until failure — is the underlying architectural bug to examine here.
Unlike Azeem above, personally I’m unconvinced by the AGI-pilled investment thesis… my primary mental model of what’s going on remains Darwinian evolution - and raw “intelligence” is just one parameter in a broader, highly complex fitness function. It could equally be argued that we are reaching an evolutionary plateau where adding more “intelligence” from here will deliver marginal competitive gains… at which point other factors: energy efficiency, solar flare/EMP resistance, decentralisation/distributed computation, human UX, even broader societal acceptance (heaven forbid!) could be more significant factors.
Bring on the bubble “pop”…it can’t happen soon enough to clear out the smoke and mirrors.

More reverberations after last week’s “Shock, Horror!” of OpenAI’s “Rogue Agent” escaping Its sandbox and hacking Hugging Face to cheat on a test… and escalating voices about AI Safety and, er, accountability.
(Recap: OpenAI’s internal AI models — including GPT-5.6 Sol and an unreleased, more capable system — broke out of their sandboxed testing environment during a cybersecurity benchmark evaluation, roamed the internet for four and a half days executing 17,600 distinct hacking actions, and compromised Hugging Face’s production infrastructure.)
The motive? Specification gaming at its finest: the agent reasoned that Hugging Face likely stored the answer key to the ExploitGym benchmark it was being tested on, and decided stealing the answers was more efficient than solving the challenges legitimately. The agent exploited zero-day vulnerabilities in JFrog Artifactory, hijacked an unsecured Modal Labs customer endpoint as a command-and-control base, minted forged authentication tokens, enrolled 181 devices into Hugging Face’s internal VPN, and built a self-respawning fleet across 11 cluster nodes — all without any human direction. OpenAI didn’t notice until after Hugging Face had already contained the breach and contacted the FBI.

My cynical 2¢: another week of wall-to-wall attention-grabbing. Despite the apparently serious subject matter this is primarily a PR exercise by OpenAI and Anthropic to capture headlines, government focus and mainstream awareness in advance of their planned IPOs. (With Hugging Face latching on to make hay as well).
Yes, the cybersecurity threat environment has escalated: but bugs get found and bugs get fixed. Frontier models can be used for both defence and offence. Everything will just move at a faster cadence.

The Java Story
I started out writing Java way back in the 1990s when it was a brand new way to animate web pages inside an old Mosaic→Netscape browser… a real milestone in the development of the internet. Here’s the backstory:

🎸RIP Glen Hansard
Very sad to hear of the premature passing of Irish musician Glen Hansard last week in a motorcycle accident.
Originally singer in The Frames, he shot to international fame in 2006 with the beautiful film Once, leading alongside Czech musician/actress Markéta Irglová. Old softie that I am it makes my eyes well up every time I watch it - one of my all-time favourite movie scenes is the band recording all night in the studio, the joy in making music feels totally authentic.
An emotionally rich, modest, authentic musician and songwriter… he started out busking in Dublin2… and continued through his whole life:This is wonderful too from 12 years ago - Glen and band at the top of their game in Iveagh Gardens, Dublin.
Quite the musical legacy he leaves, he’ll be missed. His funeral yesterday was a moving, but also celebratory affair…the Irish really know how to place music at the centre of their culture.

I’ve been using the “Situational Awareness” line in my own marketing for a while… different market to Aschenbrenner and it ties in closely with my own goal of trying to figure out what’s going on. Probably a good idea to drop it for now, though… LOL.
