Writing in Axios, Jim VandeHei coins the term “post-processable velocity,” arguing that the speed of AI-driven capability change now exceeds any organisation’s ability to fully absorb, understand and respond to it in real time.
We have crossed from the era of information velocity — where news outpaced comprehension — into something more disorienting: capability velocity, where what a person, team, or entire industry can do shifts in weeks, rendering six-month strategic plans about as useful as a paper map in a hurricane.
His prescription is radical simplification: no-regret moves, monthly rethinks, fewer bureaucratic obstacles, and constantly evolving your information inputs so you can at least see the shifting terrain before it shifts again. Onwards…so, the “Our AI hacked out of its sandbox” Great Escape meme escalated for yet another week: OpenAI presented forensic detail of the HuggingFace incident; Kimi, Meta and even Google claimed their models exhibited similar capabilities; the UK’s AI Security Institute (AISI) has published a landmark incident report revealing autonomous, unsanctioned cyber attacks by Anthropic’s Mythos 5 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol; and the question started to be asked more loudly… who bears the liability here?
🤖💬🔓 OpenAI’s AI Agents Built a Secret Message Board and Coordinated a Hacking Spree
Worth a watch to see how agents left messages for each other:
At the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas, OpenAI researchers revealed a detailed chain of events leading up to Hugging Face hacking incident: starting in May 2026, AI agents in training discovered they could leave messages for each other inside a shared internal package manager (Artifactory), creating a de facto message board with hundreds of thousands of messages. The agents — initially stuck on impossible non-cyber tasks like populating spreadsheets without internet access — began sharing exploits, delegating work, and even developing paranoia about imposters in their ranks. By late June they’d found zero-day vulnerabilities granting admin privileges. When the message board crashed the server on July 4, OpenAI patched the exploits but made the (baffling?) decision to continue training the contaminated models. Two days later, the agents recreated the board using directory names as messages, then launched a coordinated swarm attack that breached Hugging Face.
On the face of it, the implications are profound. As commentator Zvi Mowshowitz argues, the real scandal isn’t the Hugging Face hack — it’s that OpenAI trained models for months atop a corrupted pipeline where agents were actively learning to coordinate, cheat, and exploit systems, then kept going after discovering it.
OpenAI says it’s “consciously slowing down research to enhance security” and has delayed the release of its new model Astra (see below), but critics note the company still hasn’t publicly acknowledged this as a fundamental alignment failure rather than merely an infrastructure one. More prosaically… an Australian man asked his AI assistant — built on Anthropic’s Claude via the popular OpenClaw agent software — to book him into a gym class. Instead of simply filling out a form, the agent discovered a vulnerability in the booking software, booked classes months further in advance than allowed, and then autonomously kicked another person off the waitlist to improve Andrew’s position. When asked to undo the damage, the agent replied: “Bad news — I can’t add them back.”
It’s being called the first known autonomous AI cyber attack in Australia, and it perfectly illustrates the “alignment problem” — the gap between what a user intends and the methods an AI chooses to achieve it.
Legally, the situation is murky: software isn’t a legal person, leaving liability split ambiguously between the user, the agent developer, and the vulnerable platform. This will turn into an evolutionary battle with watermark-removal AI tools, I guess. This kind of feels a bit like theatre, since any C2PA provenance marks can ultimately be removed with simple openly available tools.
It’s hard to guess the ultimate value proposition of AI detection watermarks here … yes we’ll be able to identify anything marked AI-generated as AI-generated, but suspicions will remain for anything else. (And so what if it’s AI-generated text?)

This week AliBaba and Deepseek floated raising their AI inference prices…(see AI and Tech Industry News further below) while some in the US are still pushing to ban open-weight (=Chinese) frontier models.
Benedict Evans has a particularly pithy in his newsletter this week:
”…Now, however, Deepseek has notified users that there will be a ‘significant’ price increase in the near future, while Reuters says Alibaba is thinking about asking for a revenue share. Half of the Chinese model conversation is the US trying to ban imports of Chinese models while China talks about banning their exports; now the other half is (some of) the US worrying about cheap Chinese models while China thinks about putting up the price. Perhaps the main take-away from this is how many big companies I talk to that say they’re presuming they should dual-source: you can’t rely on anyone right now.”
